Psalm 103:1-5

1 – Bless the LORD, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless His holy name.

2 – Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget none of His benefits;

3 – Who pardons all your iniquities, who heals all of your diseases;

4 – Who redeems your life from the pit, who crowns you with loving-kindness and compassion;

5 – Who satisfies your years with good things, so that your youth is renewed like the eagle.

Paraphrase:

Verse 1 – “Bless the LORD” – exalt, praise, worship, esteem the one and only LORD.  “O my soul” – with my mind, my will, and my emotions … with every part of my being.  “Bless His holy name” – I exalt, praise, worship and esteem HIM because he is the one and only God; He is completely good and holy; and His nature and character exude the purest love, goodness, mercy, grace, forgiveness, and eternal life.

Verse 2 – “Bless the LORD, O my soul” – repeating this phrase emphasizes the passion and commitment of the speaker.  It reinforces the intended meaning of the statement in verse 1.  “Forget none of His benefits” – this is a very important instruction because Christians often forget their Godly inheritance.  We forget the blessings and kind intentions of God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit.  God’s anger is assuaged.  The payment for your sins has been completely satisfied through the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ on the cross.  God has paid your sin debt in full.

Verse 3 – God “who pardons all your iniquities” – God not only pardons your iniquities, He also justifies you.  He sees you (a born-again Christian) as justified, meaning He sees you “just as if you’d never sinned.” God “heals all of your diseases” – You are hard-wired by God to heal emotionally, mentally, physically, and spiritually.  Physical healing is a basic healing all humans enjoy, but the closer you are to God and live according to His truth, emotional, mental, and spiritual health are exponentially enhanced.

Verse 4 – He “redeems you from the pit” – Because of the death on the cross of the Lamb of God, Jesus, who takes away the sins of the world, you can be bought back (redeemed) and restored to a right relationship with God.  You will not live apart from God and His supernatural power. “Who crowns you with loving-kindness and compassion” – God is the perfect expression of and giver of perfect love, kindness, patience, and compassion.  Compassion means that God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit understand your suffering and they suffer along side of you … they walk closely with you every day and fully comprehend your suffering (passion).

Verse 5 – God “satisfies your years with good things” – Living daily with God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit brings a deep, sustained sense of satisfaction that the world can never give or maintain within you.  Life in Christ gives meaning, purpose, identity, and so much more for every Christian.  “Your youth is renewed like the eagle” – Your sense of joy, meaning, purpose, uniqueness enables you to maintain your “childlikeness” even in your old age.  You don’t need hormone therapy to feel young again.  God lavishes you with hope, motivation, eagerness, joy humor, and living a fulfilled life, which produces a youthful vigor which lasts forever.
