The Matrix
The movie The Matrix was released in the late 1990s. Some Christians hated this movie; many loved it. I, of course, was in the latter group. I was thankful to have a friend who loved the movie more than I did. We engaged in heady conversations about the movie’s symbolism and its portrayal of the forces of good and evil. The other thing that caught our attention was its depiction of two parallel universes; one good, one evil.
I sincerely believe the existence of two parallel universes. The Bible substantiates this belief. According to the Scriptures, there are two spheres which exist simultaneously. They are both as real as you and I are. One is visible; the other is not. Being visible doesn't make the first one more real or relevant. Being invisible doesn't make the second one less real or relevant. Both exist and both impact our lives.
Christians universally believe that the invisible realm actually supersedes the other. Of course you know I’m talking about heaven and earth. To people of faith, although heaven is an unseen place, its power, value and eminence far out-weigh anything the world pretends to offer. When the Bible says that Jesus is seated at the right hand of God the Father, this means that at this very moment while I am sitting in my room writing this article, Jesus is also presently sitting at His Father’s right hand.
Before you conclude that I’m a crazed Christian mental healthy counselor or before you call the crisis hotline on my behalf, take a moment to think about what I’m saying. If Jesus understood that heaven is a real place wouldn’t that help Him endure the cross. If Paul were able to live in heaven as he walked the earth, would that give him the courage to sing in prison? Being able to “live” in the spiritual realm somehow helps us to rise above earthly circumstances. If this worked for Jesus, Paul, Stephen, and others, wouldn’t it work for us as well? I think it would.
Today, imagine that even though you are walking on earth, you are also seated with Jesus at the right hand of God. Write down the difference this makes in your ability to endure and navigate through some of the difficult moments of your day.
