ACTIONS BEAT THREATS

Dad, talking to Sara last evening in the Jackson home:
"Wow! Look at this cell phone bill. You went $180.00 over your text messaging allotment. What is the matter with you young lady? I don't see how you can throw away money like that. We're going to have some rules around here. You're going to have to learn a little responsibility. How do you expect me to keep paying for this kind of nonsense? If this happens again you are in big trouble!"

Dad, talking to his friend this morning at work:
"Sara went over her text messaging allotment again this month. I had to really lay down the law to her last night. I don't know why kids have to spend so much money on those phones and then just blow it off like it's no big deal."

Dad's friend: "This is out of control. What are you going to do?"

Dad: "If this keeps up, I'm going to have to take her phone away."

Jim Fay, thinking to himself:
Dad is all talk and no action. He is a little late taking action. He should have taken the phone the first time she abused the privilege. When she asked why, he should have said, "The phone has become a problem. Some day when you've paid me back for this I'll consider returning it."

Sure, she will argue and complain and make threats of her own. That's why Love and Logic parents use, "I love you too much to argue," to neutralize the arguing.

Taking action trumps complaining and threatening every time.

This dad needs to listen to "Hormones and Wheels," just one of the products included in the Teen Package, on the way home from work each day.

Thanks for reading.
