Psalm 31:1-3

“Having Faith”

  1. Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help and rely on horses, and trust in chariots because they are many and in horsemen because they are very strong, but they do not look to the Holy One of Israel, nor seek the Lord!
  2. Yet He also is wise and will bring disaster and does not retract His words, but will arise against the house of evildoers and against the help of the workers of iniquity.
  3. Now the Egyptians are men and not God, and their horses are flesh and not spirit; so the Lord will stretch out His hand and he who helps will stumble and he who is helped will fall.

Egypt was a land idols and idol worshipers.  I don’t know the sum total of birds, bugs, animals, royalty, and heavenly orbs declared as “gods,” but there were a lot.

It’s interesting that God led Israel out of Egypt.  Guess He had to get them away from the visible “gods” so they could eventually turn their hearts and faces to the one true God, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

Amazingly it took 40 years in the wilderness to do so.  Humans are ridiculously stubborn and true “faith” does not always come easily even when you see a pillar of fire by night and a cloud by day leading you through the wilderness.

Thanks be to Jesus Christ that He is the author and perfecter of our faith (Hebrews 12:2).
