Anger, Jealousy, Sadness, Self-Rejection …

When we are children, and we have a problem with someone, we get angry. For whatever reason, that anger pushes the problem away; we get the result we want. It happens a second time — we react with anger — and now we know if we get angry we push the problem away. Then we practice and practice, until we become masters of anger. In the same way, we become masters of jealousy, masters of sadness, masters of self-rejection.

All of our drama and suffering is by practice. We make an agreement with ourselves, and we practice that agreement until it […]

Serenity Prayer (complete version)

Serenity Prayer

God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.

(Although known most widely in its abbreviated form above,
the entire prayer reads as follows…)

Living one day at a time;
Enjoying one moment at a time;
Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace;
Taking, as He did, this sinful world
as it is, not as I would have it;
Trusting that He will make all things right
if I surrender to His Will;
That I may be reasonably happy in this life
and supremely happy with Him
Forever in the next.
Amen.

Paraphrase of 23rd Psalm

“God Has My Back” – 23rd Psalm

God has my back – I have everything I need.

God has my back – I sleep comfortably and safely under His protection and watchful eye.

God has my back – I drink from cool, refreshing streams.

God has my back – He heals the deepest parts of me: my traumas, choices, and unseen hurts.

God has my back – He transforms and sanctifies me. He helps me choose right-living and it shows the world His glory, goodness, and power.

God has my back – When I walk through life’s darkest valleys and rough paths, when I face disappointments or tragedies (you know, the […]

How Wise Are You?

There are two kinds of wisdom: the wisdom of man and the wisdom of God.

Man’s wisdom consists of:

  • Knowledge
  • Experience
  • Reasoning
  • Character
  • Philosophy
  • Intellect
  • Intuition
  • Discernment

God’s wisdom consists of:

  • Perfect Knowledge
  • Perfect Experience
  • Perfect Reasoning
  • Perfect Character
  • Perfect Truth (not philosophy)
  • Perfect Intellect
  • Perfect Understanding (not intuition)
  • Perfect Love

When you are faced with a decision or concern, be careful not to depend on the wisdom of man because it is limited and narrow in scope.  It can be easily tainted by fear and self-protection.

Instead of depending on the wisdom of man, which will ALWAYS be limited in some way, turn to God and His wisdom.  He will never let you down.  He will often ask you […]

Tears

What are tears?

Tears are produced by tear glands, which are small glands inside your upper eyelid. Tears keep the surface of your eyeball clean and moist, and help protect your eye from damage.

When you blink, your eyelids spread the tears over the surface of the eye. Sometimes tears flow over your lower eyelid, but mostly the tears flow down a tiny tube at the edge of your lower eyelid, next to your nose – if you look very carefully you can see a tiny dot that is the beginning of this tube. This tube carries the tears to the back […]

MTA – BR Location Closing It’s Doors

Notice!!!!

Murphy Toerner and Associates – Baton Rouge is closing its doors.

May, 2015 we would have celebrated 23 years of serving people of faith in the Baton Rouge, New Orleans, and Hammond areas. (I actually had clients drive from Hattiesburg, MS, Monroe, and Lake Charles to meet with me during those 23 years.)

During these 23 years, I had the privilege of:

  • Encouraging many people to become Licensed Professional Counselors because I could see their potential in serving God’s people through the mental health counseling and life coaching  venues.
  • Mentoring the LPCs and LMFTs who worked with me at MTA – BR.
  • Supervising numerous clinical […]

15 Styles of Distorted Thinking

  1. Filtering: You take the negative details and magnify them, while filtering out all positive aspects of a situation. A single detail may be picked out, and the whole event becomes colored by this detail. When you pull negative things out of context, isolated from all the good experiences around you, you make them larger and more awful than they really are.
  2. Polarized Thinking: The hallmark of this distortion is an insistence on dichotomous choices. Things are black or white, good or bad. You tend to perceive everything at the extremes, with very little room for a middle ground. The […]

Philippians 4:13 (NIV)

I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.

What ever you are facing today, if you trust in Jesus Christ and walk closely with Him, you will be able to face, walk through, endure, conquer that, which you face.
